I have received a letter from you about a Green Card, what do I need to do now?

What is a Green Card?

A Green Card provides proof of insurance for motorists. Each Green Card is unique to a particular vehicle and only drivers named on the Green Card are covered to drive it. Green Cards are non-transferrable and specific to individual vehicles covered by insurance.

All European Economic Area (EEA) countries (EU countries, and Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway) are part of a Green Card free circulation area, meaning that motorists based there do not have to carry Green Cards when visiting other countries in the area. [Source: Association of British Insurers]

I am a driver in the UK what will happen after 1 January 2021?

UK motorists, including road hauliers, will need to carry an insurance green card when driving their vehicle from 1 January 2021 in the EU unless the EU Commission agrees that the UK remains part of the Green Card Free Circulation Zone. The Green Card requirement will also apply to motorists in Northern Ireland driving across the border with the Republic of Ireland. Motorists failing to carry a Green Card when one is needed risk having their vehicle seized and prosecution. [Source: Association of British Insurers]

You will still need to carry your UK driving licence with you. You may also need an international driving permit (IDP) to drive in some EU and EEA countries from 1 January 2021. The type of IDP that you may need will depend on the countries you will drive through. You will not need an IDP to drive when visiting Ireland if you have a UK driving licence. You can get an IDP over the counter at the Post Office. If you’re taking your own vehicle, you will also need a GB sticker. [Source: UK Government].

How do I get a Green Card?

We have already produced a Green Card for vehicles covered by our insurance in the UK. If you have not yet received one or would like one for a new or additional vehicle please contact your broker.

I have any driver cover why does my Green Card not show this?

Green Cards are specific to individual vehicles and list named drivers only, if you require additional drivers to be included please contact your broker who can arrange this for you.

How will Brexit affect my Chubb insurance policy?

• The territorial limit in your policy currently provides insurance for driving in the European Union, Andorra, Gibraltar, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Monaco, Norway, San Marino and Switzerland. Please be assured that whatever happens regarding Brexit, it will not affect your insurance policy with Chubb and coverage will continue to apply within the UK, the Channel Islands, the Isle of Man and the other Countries listed above.
• No change to any existing policy coverage, premiums or benefits;
• No change to any existing certificates of cover, all existing certificates remain valid;
• No change to any existing points of contact;
• No change to your terms and conditions;
• There will also be no effect on any claims which have been made or may be made under your policy.

Do I need to have a Green Card for travel in the UK, including Northern Ireland?

Green Cards are not required for travel in the UK, including Northern Ireland, if you have a valid Irish insurance disc. The insurance disc will serve as proof of insurance to the legal authorities in the UK, including Northern Ireland. [Source: Motor Insurers’ Bureau of Ireland (MIBI)]
