This coverage pays, in excess of Japanese Compulsory Insurance (JCI), for bodily injury or death of the other party, for which you are legally liable.
The amounts that can be paid under JCI, for example, is up to 30 million yen, and you may think it’s enough, but it isn't in Japan. Recent court awards have reached 100,000,000 yen. * In all U.S. military bases in Japan, this coverage is required at a minimum of 30,000,000 yen, in addition to JCI and Property Damage Liability Coverage. Please consult with your legal counsel or one of our authorized insurance agents to make sure that you are properly insured.
Driver/Passenger Accident Coverage
When you buy Bodily Injury Liability Coverage, this coverage is automatically provided. This coverage pays for the loss of life or bodily injury to the owner, driver or passengers of the insured automobile (up to 14,000,000 yen per person) in an accident which does not involve third parties (e.g. hitting a telephone pole). This pays for losses not covered by JCI.
This coverage pays for property damage to the other party, for which you are legally liable.
Minimum Coverage: 3,000,000 yen for each accident
Higher limits are available at a nominal additional cost. We recommend 5,000,000 yen or more. Consult your legal counsel or one of our authorized insurance agents to fnd out what’s right for your needs.
This is a "must", as it is required by Japanese law. It pays for bodily injury or death of the other party, for which you are legally liable. Please remember, the Japanese Law is very strict. You have to buy JCI not only to drive but also to have your automobile registered or inspected.
