Chubb Charitable Foundation Mission

The Chubb Charitable Foundation believes that meaningful contributions that support our communities globally provide lasting benefits to society, to Chubb and to Chubb employees. Through philanthropy, global partnerships and company sponsored-volunteer activities focused on giving the gift of time and donations, the Chubb Charitable Foundation supports clearly defined projects that solve problems with measurable and sustainable outcomes, helping people in the countries where we live and work build productive and healthy lives.

Our commitment to assist those less fortunate and to be stewards of the planet is focused on the areas of education, poverty and health, and the environment. In the last decade, Chubb has contributed more than $100 million to the Foundation.

Philanthropic Projects

Chubb supports communities around the world through our established philanthropic partnerships and company-sponsored initiatives. Through the Chubb Charitable Foundation’s Global Citizens Fund, employees have the opportunity to help the Foundation provide meaningful and targeted support in local communities in each region in which we operate.

Equitable Access to Education

Georgia State University Scholarship

The Chubb Charitable Foundation is supporting programs to address inequality and promote social, economic and racial justice.  One example is establishing the Chubb Robert M. Hernandez Scholarship for undergraduates studying risk management and insurance at Georgia State University’s Robinson College of Business.

Environment

We are working with The Nature Conservancy, the world’s largest conservation organization, to reduce the risk from storm impacts and rising sea levels along one of our country’s most vulnerable shorelines. A $1 million grant from The Chubb Charitable Foundation includes a restoration and resilience project in the City of Miami to demonstrate the flood protection benefits of nature-based solutions. The project is designed to increase protection from flooding and serve as a model that can be replicated in other coastal cities in the U.S. and globally.

Poverty & Health

For more than a decade, Chubb has supported International Rescue Committee’s (IRC) work in responding to the world’s worst humanitarian crises and helping the individuals affected by crisis. Today, Chubb supports IRC’s Jobs to Careers program (J2C), offering basic career training to help refugees enter higher-skill, higher-wage jobs in the U.S.  J2C is designed to support refugees and vulnerable immigrant populations in achieving lasting economic independence by equipping them with the skills, knowledge, and support they need to transition into career pathways, offering higher wages and opportunity for growth.

Volunteerism

Grow-a-Row

As part of the Insurance Industry Charitable Foundation’s Week of Service, Chubb employees participated in an Apple Gleaning project for America’s Grow-A-Row. Employees gleaned, or salvaged, apples that would otherwise go to waste after the harvest is collected and picked from the trees. Chubb aided in the rescuing of over 14,000 pounds of apples, which equates to 56,000 servings of fresh produce, which went to those in need.

Environmental Philanthropy

The Chubb Charitable Foundation supports a wide range of environmental philanthropies in local communities around the world. Through these initiatives, Chubb promotes a healthy and sustainable planet, strengthens the resilience of communities and protects biodiversity against the effects of climate change.

Projects

Chubb supports the Conservation Action Fund of the Rainforest Trust, a global conservation organization that purchases and protects the most threatened tropical forests, saving endangered wildlife through partnerships and community engagement. The Conservation Action Fund focuses on urgent conservation initiatives to protect critical habitats that would otherwise be used for development, agriculture or natural resource extraction. Funds have been directed to expanded land protection of the Papagaios de Altitude Reserve in the Atlantic Rainforest of Brazil and of a critical portion of the Leuser Ecosystem on the Indonesian island of Sumatra. The preservation of these two critical areas will prevent the release of more than 350,000 metric tons of stored carbon, mitigating the effects of carbon emissions on the climate.

Chubb has supported The Nature Conservancy (TNC) in various conservation projects globally for nearly a decade. Chubb supports the Resilience Project in Miami-Dade County, which aims to make a compelling case for increased investment of public and private dollars to finance mangrove restoration and produce a foundation upon which to dramatically reduce flood damages in the face of rising seas and more severe storms. TNC is partnering with the City of Miami to map out the project within local guidelines and is building out a strategic communications campaign to share the progress and outcomes of the pilot project and inform the broader context of nature-based resilience solutions.

“Chubb recognizes that mitigating the growing threat of climate change requires action from government, the private sector and society-at-large. Through Chubb’s collaboration with The Nature Conservancy, we can help make a difference not only in this resilience project with the City of Miami, but gain practically tested insights that can be replicated around the world in other coastal cities vulnerable to climate change.”

Lori Dunstan, Executive Director, Chubb Charitable Foundation

The Conservation Fund

Since 2005, Chubb has supported The Conservation Fund, which has protected more than 8 million acres across the U.S. In recent years, the Chubb Charitable Foundation provided more than $1 million to The Conservation Fund initiatives that have protected nearly 370,000 acres of threatened lands and waters. Chubb’s support allows the Fund to protect top-priority conservation lands through the Chubb Land Legacy Revolving Fund, which has protected habitats valued at more than $228.5 million.

Chubb’s Environmental Risk business unit contributes to The American Forests’ Global ReLeaf® program, the oldest national nonprofit conservation organization in the U.S. The program implements science-based restoration efforts to ensure the long–term health and resiliency of our forests. Chubb recently pledged to sponsor the planting of 33,000 trees in 2020 to support the American Forests. Chubb’s contribution will support planting projects in native forest landscapes across North America. Specific project landscapes include California, Michigan and Ontario.

Bermuda National Trust

The Bermuda National Trust plays a leading role in environmental stewardship in Bermuda. Established in 1970, the Trust preserves Bermuda’s natural, architectural and historic treasures and encourages public appreciation of them. In the Trust’s care are 82 properties, covering about 280 acres of land. These properties represent much of the best of Bermuda’s heritage. For more than 20 years, Chubb has supported the Trust with more than $450,000 in grants to aid in their mission of education and preservation.
